Internal electrical discharges can ignite vapors accumulated in the headspace of non-metal or lined fixed roof storage tanks containing crude oil, condensate, and produced water. Tanks made of corrosion resistant materials, such as fiberglass or PVC, or internally lined steel, where the lining is a non-conductive material such as epoxy are vulnerable to lightning strikes, leading to costly repairs, environmental hazards, and operational downtime.

The Spline Ball Terminal (SBT) The Spline Ball Terminal from Lightning Eliminators offers a superior alternative to standard air terminals for new or existing lightning protection systems. Unlike traditional lightning rods designed only to collect, the SBT is engineered to both reduce the risk of direct strikes and function as a highly efficient air terminal. The Spline Ball Terminal® (SBT) is UL 96 listed and approved for use in NFPA 780 and UL 96A compliant systems.
The In-Tank Potential Equalizer (IPE) lightning protection design is made specifically for non-metal and lined tanks in order to combat the problem of internal electrical discharges and the subsequent ignition of the vapors inside tanks. Its no-point lightning protection design makes it safer, more economical and corrosion resistant.
Storing flammable liquids in nonconductive tanks is not recommended. However, if nonconductive tanks are used for hydrocarbon storage, API 2003 recommends a grounded fill line or an internal conductor, such as a cable or rod, extending from the top to the bottom of the tank. The IPE® is specifically designed to meet this requirement and is a preferred solution under API 12P.
