How the Spline Ball Ionizer Works
The SBI from Lightning Eliminators is a modular lightning prevention component that enhances Dissipation Array® System (DAS®) installations and serves as the first line of lightning defense for structures with a low wind profile that require lightweight protection.
Like our Dissipation Array® System, the patented SBI builds on more than 25 years of research and development, employing proven technology to minimize the risk of direct lightning strikes at the protected site, engineered to provide multiple layers of protection for critical applications.
Dual Operating Modes
In its primary mode, the SBI reduces the risk of direct strikes through charge transfer, a process in which a well-grounded point exchanges ions between the air and earth. This ionizing effect helps maintain the local electric field below lightning potential, making the protected site less likely to experience a direct strike.
During severe storms, the SBI acts as a highly effective air terminal, safely intercepting any strikes it may not prevent. Unlike traditional wire brush devices, which may become ineffective after a single strike, the SBI continues to lower the risk of subsequent strikes.
Its unique design and geometry allow it to capture incoming strikes from virtually any direction, creating a larger area of protection than standard air terminals.
A Systems Approach
The Spline Ball Ionizer is a key component of your total lightning protection system, working with DAS technology as well as grounding and surge suppression to achieve complete protection. A typical system includes:
- The Dissipation Array® System, available in a range of configurations for almost any structure.
