IPE® - In-Tank Potential Equalizer®
Charge Mitigation for Non-Metallic and Lined Storage Tanks
As non-metal and lined storage tanks become more common - particularly for corrosive or flammable materials in oilfield, water treatment, and industrial applications - the risk of internal electrical discharge grows. These tanks are often made of fiberglass, PVC, or internally lined steel with non-conductive coatings such as epoxy. While corrosion-resistant, these materials do not naturally dissipate electrical charge.
During routine operation, flammable or combustible vapors accumulate above the liquid surface. If static electricity builds - or if a nearby lightning strike alters the surrounding electrical field - an electrical discharge inside the tank can ignite those vapors.
The result: fire, explosion, and equipment loss.
The IPE® Solution: Equalize and Neutralize
The In-Tank Potential Equalizer® (IPE) was engineered specifically to protect non-metal and lined tanks from these risks. When inserted into a tank and bonded to an external ground, the IPE:
- Dissipates static charge from within the tank’s contents
- Equalizes the potential between the tank contents and ground
- Reduces internal electric field strength by creating a partial Faraday cage
Together, these functions minimize the likelihood of internal discharge and vapor ignition - keeping your operation safer and compliant.
Built for Performance
- Efficient Tubular Design: Maximizes surface exposure while minimizing weight
- Corrosion Resistant: 100% 316 stainless steel construction for long-term durability
- Cost-Effective: Performs better at a fraction of the cost of competitive systems
- No Sharp Points: Smooth surface prevents corona discharge and arc initiation
Why Smooth Surfaces Matter
LEC strongly advises against using sharp points or wire-based designs inside storage tanks. Research by NASA and the Lightning and Transients Research Institute found that corona currents as low as 200 microamperes can ignite flammable vapors (NASA Technical Note D-440).
Sharp metallic objects - including wire brushes or pointed conductors - can generate currents far above this threshold, dramatically increasing risk. The IPE’s smooth, tubular design eliminates that hazard while still providing effective charge mitigation.
Proven Through Testing
The IPE has been laboratory-tested and third-party validated under both electrical and lightning simulation conditions. Results confirm that it delivers superior charge equalization and internal safety compared to alternative designs.
