RGA 750 Generation 2 – The Perfect Fuel Tank Lightning Protection Device

In the past, lightning protection systems (LPS) involved sticking a metal rod into the ground. Today, fuel tank lightning protection involves a three-step process:

  • Protection of the structure
  • Grounding/Bonding
  • Surge Suppression

Fuel tank lightning protection employs the basic conventional system with modified air terminals which are designed to reduce the incidence of direct strikes to the protected structure.

PROBLEM

Tank farms are made up of tanks of different sizes with a total capacity of thousands of cubic meters for storing crude oil and other liquid substances. Basically, all these liquids are highly flammable and, once they are burning it’s extremely difficult to extinguish them.

If a lightning strike or surge causes a tank to catch fire the consequences at the tank farm are dire. People in the vicinity risk life and limb, the environment is polluted and the economic damage is incalculably high. In order to keep the tank farms and their employees’ safe, the tanks are monitored round the clock by highly available alarm and extinguishing systems. Custom designed fuel tank lightning and surge protection systems ensure that these tanks and the monitoring systems are always safe.

SOLUTION

  • Risk analysis of individual parts of the plant to be protected
  • Appropriate surge protective measures are also considered
  • Grounding and bonding. The purpose of bonding is to bring all the steel equipment to the same electrical potential.

While grounding is done to ensure that the current escapes to the earth properly. Bonding in conjunction with grounding is highly important to create a safe working environment.

THE PERFECT SOLUTION BY LEC

RGA 750 Generation 2

The RGA is designed to retrofit easily onto any existing tank, even while in service. It’s not affected by the condition of the tank because the RGA and its cable are attached to optimal locations on the rim and roof. When properly applied, multiple RGA’s provide low impedance bonds to prevent dangerous arcing between the roof and shell. It contains 2 very strong internal springs to retract the cable, resulting in an increase in retraction force of 600% more than any other comparable device on the market.
